Seeking a Center that Can Hold
In the years just after World War I, the Irish poet William Butler Yeats painted a pessimistic picture of the world in his poem, "The Second Coming:"
Things fall apart; the center cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity.
Now, almost a century later, the world has not totally fallen apart, but Yeats’ picture still fits in many ways. We still have to ask, is there some center to life that is strong enough to hold things together? Is there some conviction that can move us to channel our passions in the direction of redemption instead of destruction?
Christians believe there is. We believe that Christ is the center and the source of redemption. The question is, can we prove that belief by our actions in the church and in the world? The forces of division are very strong nowadays. Nations are pulled apart by ethnic and political divisions. Our own country is divided over numerous issues. Denominations are increasingly divided by doctrine, ideology, and struggles for power. Congregations are divided over worship styles, theology, leadership issues, and more.
We can no longer count on tradition or habitual loyalty to institutions to hold us together. We will have to unite around ultimate, eternal things. We can start with the first of the ten commandments, "You shall have no other gods before me." Jesus pointed to another statement of the same thing and identified the most important commandment as "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength." He said, "Strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things [the physical needs of life] will be given to you as well."
In the church we must unite around worship, prayer, and Scripture. Only the one God can make us one. Our love for God must be followed by love for neighbor, brother, and sister. We must put our own desires in third place behind these other priorities. We must establish a strong center for our church life and our personal life, or things will fall apart.
